Scene2Go web platform for Projectbureau M2
Large 3D laser scans accessible directly through the browser
The challenge
Projectbureau M2 captures 3D laser scans of architecture projects and visualizes them through FARO's Scene2Go, an Electron application for Windows, Mac and Linux. Those scans are huge, sometimes up to 50 GB per project, and viewers had to install specialized software to open them. For sharing with clients and stakeholders, that was simply too much friction. They needed a solution where recipients did not have to install or download anything.
Our solution
After a thorough analysis of Scene2Go, we discovered that the visualizations could be made web-accessible by adapting certain internal files. Building on that knowledge, we developed a custom platform on a dedicated server, optimized for handling heavy files. Projectbureau M2 simply uploads the zip file, and our system does the rest: files are automatically made web-compatible, unpacked and placed where they belong.
Secure sharing without any installation
Projectbureau M2 decides who has access on a per-project basis. An invited viewer logs in with their email address and receives a temporary verification code (valid for 15 minutes). After that, they have direct access to all projects they have rights to. No software, no accounts to remember, all through the browser.
The impact
Projectbureau M2 no longer has to send gigantic files to dozens of stakeholders. They upload once and then share a link. That saves enormous amounts of time and bandwidth. For viewers, the experience is much smoother: just log in and view, even on a work environment where nothing can be installed.
Why this project stands out
The strength is in the combination of:
Reverse engineering of FARO's Electron application to enable web visualization
A fully automated upload process, even for files of tens of GB
Access management with magic-code login per project
A dedicated server setup specifically tuned for heavy 3D data
