Subscription migration for vn.nl
From WPG's ABOS to Abonnementenland, without a single subscriber noticing
The challenge
When Vrij Nederland separated from WPG Uitgevers, it also lost access to WPG's internal subscription system ABOS-LAVA. A complex situation: thousands of subscribers with active terms, automatic direct debits and delivery preferences had to be moved to a new platform. Ideally without a single subscriber missing an issue, paying twice or having to log in again.
Our solution
We led the complete migration to Abonnementenland. First, we mapped in detail how ABOS stored its data and which Abonnementenland field matched best. Then we wrote the conversion logic, adjusted the Abonnementenland configuration to fit the way VN works, and migrated the connections to editorial and delivery systems. Everything was tested in a separate environment before the actual cutover went live.
A smooth transition for subscribers
For subscribers, almost nothing changed. They kept receiving their magazine, their direct debits kept running, and existing address and preference data was right where it should be. Subscription management for VN itself, on the other hand, became a lot more straightforward, with all subscribers in a single modern, evolving platform.
The impact
VN now runs fully independently on a scalable subscription system that is built for publishers. Service management is more modern, error-prone manual work is removed from the chain, and the editorial team can focus on content instead of system maintenance.
Why this project stands out
The strength is in the combination of:
A complete dataset of active subscriptions and direct debits transferred without errors
No interruption for subscribers, no failed payments
Full translation from WPG's internal system to Abonnementenland's standard
A new, independent foundation for VN after the WPG split
A complex migration ahead?
We guide data migrations and system transitions where users barely notice anything is happening.
