Dealay, automatic NS delay claims
Travelers automatically get refunded for every delay, without claiming themselves
The challenge
Train travelers leave millions of euros in compensation on the table every year, simply because filing claims takes time and effort. Dealay wanted to put an end to that: sign up once with your OV-chipkaart credentials, and from that moment on the platform handles everything automatically. The system needed to know in real time whether trains were delayed, automatically pay out when they were, and on top of that offer a referral system in which existing users can recommend others and earn from it themselves.
Our solution
We built a platform in two layers: an easily adjustable WordPress frontend for sign-up, account management and marketing, and a Laravel backend for the actual claim logic. Users log in via their OV-chipkaart, give one-time consent, and afterwards see an overview of their journeys, claims and payouts. For management, all editorial content is editable through WordPress, while the financial and logistical side is handled by Laravel behind the scenes.
Real-time grip on Dutch public transport
Through an integration with the NDOV portal, the backend tracks live where every train is and which delays occur. By comparing that data with the check-in and check-out moments of users, the system knows exactly who is entitled to which compensation. For the traveler, that happens completely invisibly: a confirmation email, a click, and the claim is queued for payout.
Automatic payouts via Bunq
For paying out compensations, a Bunq API integration was set up. Every month, the platform bundles all validated claims into one payment run, after which users automatically receive their money. That removes the last bit of manual work from the process.
The impact
Dealay users no longer had to do anything to receive compensation for NS delays, and could earn extra through a referral system by bringing in friends or family. The platform combined real-time public transport data, automatic payments and an accessible user environment in one well-thought-out stack.
Why this project stands out
The strength is in the combination of:
Real-time integration with the NDOV portal for current public transport status
Automatic payouts through a Bunq API integration
Split between WordPress frontend and Laravel backend for the best of both worlds
A built-in referral system that rewards users for recommendations
