Package scanner app for Noteborn

The challenge

Noteborn produces custom-made wardrobes and storage solutions, with goods moving in and out daily. The logistics team needed a handy app for an employee to scan packages, capture damage with photos directly, and let the recipient sign digitally for receipt. All data had to land in the ERP system automatically, without intermediate steps or retyping. To make it more challenging: the app first had to run on industrial handhelds with Windows Mobile 6, the standard operating system for logistics equipment at that time.

Our solution

We developed the first version of the scanner app in VB.NET specifically for Windows Mobile 6. When that hardware was phased out, we migrated the app to Android 5 in Java, and later evolved it for Android 10. The flow stayed the same throughout: scan, add photos if needed, capture a signature, and forward everything in one go.

Seamless forwarding to the ERP

The data is sent by the app to a dedicated mail proxy we built. There, every submission is converted into the right format and automatically forwarded to Noteborn's ERP system. For the logistics employee, work is done as soon as the signature is captured.

Stable in production

For rollout, we use a closed track in the Google Play Store, so only authorized Noteborn devices can install the app. Firebase Analytics and Crashlytics give insight into use and any incidents, allowing updates to be rolled out in a targeted, evidence-based way.

The impact

The package scanner has been part of Noteborn's daily logistics work for years and has grown along with multiple generations of hardware. It saves manual work, prevents mistakes in the ERP administration and gives Noteborn a direct piece of evidence whenever something goes wrong in transit.
